Mid West WA Wildflowers 2009 : Coalseam Conservation reserve, and Mid West WA are having one of the best wildflower seasons in a long time, and that translates into literally carpets of everlastings across normally very arid country. It was beautiful and amazing to see.

We went to Watheroo NP, Coalseam Conservation Reserve, and some spots along the road to Wubin from Watheroo NP, over two and a half days, but wished we had more time.

Kings Park on fire : On the way to work today, there was a bush fire. So of coarse, I stopped and watched, the helicopters were awesome! It was already fiercely hot, gusty wind, hope they got it under control. Bit late to work today....

Cape Arid National Park (WA) : The first time I went to Cape Arid (2 hours east of Esperence) was in the summer of 2007-8. It was baking hot, endless blue sky and ocean, and squeaky white sand. I returned this year, spring 2009, and experienced gale-force winds, stop-start rain, and almost endless cloud. I spent a day in the tent reading, then discovered that the car was warmer, a day in the car listening to ABC country radio (and quite enjoyed it!) and drank three thermoses of tea to stay warm. At least the wildflowers were fantastic, and the weather created quite spectacular scenery. Not quite what I'd planned however!

I only managed to take photos of the wildflowers for half a day ( I was there for four), because that was the only day the sun was out, and the wind didn't blow me, or the flowers to antarctica.

Fitzgerald River National Park (WA) : I took nine days off work to go down south and check out the wildflowers at National Parks near Esperence, WA. I went to Cape Arid, and Fitzgerald River. The wildflowers were spectacular, as was the weather spectacularly horrible. Gale-force winds for most of the time, lots of rain, mostly cloudy. I had one whole, and two half-days that weren't howling gales, rainy, or completely overcast - out of nine.

A nice and completely unexpected surprise, were the whales. In the Point Ann campsite beach, where I camped, five southern right whale mothers and their calves sheltered and frolicked in the waves for the days I was there. Several times each day I'd go to the lookout and see what they were up to. I've never seen whales up close before. My last night was just magic. There was no wind (a first), the sun had set, and the sky was lit up with the colourful after-effects. The five mother whales and their calves were scattered accross the bay, gently bobbing at the water's surface, as they snoozed for the night. I could hear one of them blowing every so often as i went to sleep. And to think I almost went home a day early!
