Malaysia - Borneo 2009 : We went to Borneo for two weeks, and I spent a total of 3 days in cities - one in KK, and two in Kuching.
For most of the time, we were in the jungle, and Phil went diving (I went back to the jungle).

These pics are from the three days we spent in towns, and some of my longhouse stay.

It was a fantastically easy trip to do, the info centres were exceedingly helpful and friendly, everything ran on time, and things just happened the way they might in your imagination. My easiest trip to organise ever.

Kubah NP Frogs : Borneo, 2009

On my last night in Borneo, I went to Kubah National Park, reputed to be fantastic for frogs. There were 50 species reported to occur here, and lots of pitcher plants too.
After 5 hours of solid tropical rain which lasted till dusk, I found lots and lots of frogs that night. It was awesome! So good, that I stayed up till midnight, and didn't really see the park in daylight, as I had an early taxi take me back to town for my flight home.

I think I foud 13 species, most I've identified, but some are not. Please feel free to let me know what they are, or correct me if my guess is out! (please, please!)

Tech notes: I took these all with my trusty 100mm macro, and twin flash with stofen diffusers. Settings were constant - 1/160, f16, iso 200.

Gunung Mulu National Park : Borneo, 2009
I love this national park, the jungle is green and full of living things - frogs, insects, monkeys, birds. We stayed for 6 days here, did all of the tourist caves, one adventure cave, the pinnacles, walked to the waterfall, and lots around the main hq. Simply an awesome part of Borneo, and very well organised/managed. The guides were also excellent, professional, knowledgeable, and very keen.

Tech notes: I took my tripod, 100mm macro, twin flash, 16-35 (hubby had the 24-70 on his cam). I also had a 50mm f/1.2 and used this inside the caves, more as a trail than for serious pics. I used the tripod for the jungle tree shots, the macro kit - inc flash for the night/day critter pics, and you can click on the info to see my settings. The pinnacles is in shade the in the morning-early afternoon, so don't expect amazing photos, unless you sneak up later on your own...bags not coming down at night!

I will NEVER take this much stuff on a trip again, but I'm glad I did, just this once.

Bako National Park : Borneo, 2009
We did an overnight trip here, landed in the afternoon, and stayed till late afternoon the next day. You will see proboscus monkeys here (unless you are visually impared), there are also lots of pitcher plants, nice beaches, great walks, and mischeif-making macaque monkeys...watch your lunch!!

The weather wasn't great for pics, and we were there to walk. These are all I got.

Luminescent Fungi : Borneo, 2009
There are probably luminescent fungi all over Borneo, but these were taken in Bako and Gunung Mulu NP's. To find these, you need to go out at night, find some rotten logs or branches, and turn your torch off. After a few seconds, you'll see little glowing patches on the dead wood or ground. Sometimes it's the filaments, sometimes it's the mushroom part.

Tech notes: these were all taken with my tripod (I'm not that steady!) at 30sec - the max my camera will do, at the highest f-stop I could get with ISO 1600 - there's one 6400 ISO, check out the noise! Some of the fungi were brighter than others, some were a bit of a challenge to expose at all. They also varied in size from 1cm to a couple of mm.

Peninsula Malaysia 2009 : These are pics from a quick jaunt to Malaysia for just under two weeks in 2009, on one of those fantastically cheap Air Asia flights. Luckily for me, they weren't so full and I got 3 seats on the overnight flight back! We spent time in KL, Perhentihan Islands up north, a day in Kota Baru, and did a 3 day trek into Taman Negara National Park. My favouites were the reef and jungle.
